August and Everything After (I LOVE That CD!)
So, wow, it's the last day of August. Where did the time go? It was a crazy busy month for me, with our big move, the kids starting school, and all kinds of other stuff. I tried not to neglect Ye Olde Blog, but it still happened a bit. Even now, after 3 weeks of packing, moving, and settling in, I've got lots of work to do. Anyway, there are just a few things I want to mention:
BestBooks - Julie Smith writes the funniest, most concise reviews ever. It's refreshing to get her perspective in just a few words. Her recent review of Breaking Dawn made me laugh out loud.
* Speaking of awards, I hope you're following the fun on My Friend Amy's blog. I love the idea of Book Blogger Appreciation Week. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline for nominations, but good luck everybody. Fabulous idea, Amy. I love it.
* You've probably noticed that I've been reading review books almost exclusively. That's because I'm often under deadline to finish them. I love review books, but I'm also itching to read some of the novels I've been neglecting. A couple of my favorite authors have come out with new books this month, so hopefully, I'll be getting to them soon. What can you look forward to this month on BBB? Lots of reviews, a couple of author interviews and at least one giveaway. So, definitely stay tuned.
* Okay, this last one is for my 9-year-old son. He has been hounding me about checking out a certain book from the library. The problem is, he's not sure of the title. His teacher read the book aloud to his class last year, then she retired, so I don't have her email address. So, I was hoping some of you teachers/librarians/readers can help us out. According to him, the book was about some boys who race their bikes down Death Hill. That's all he can remember - not very helpful. He thinks the book is by Thomas Rockwell, the author of How to Eat Fried Worms, but we couldn't find any info when we googled him. Any help will be much appreciated!
* My stomach's growling and I've got to get ready for church, so I'm signing out. Have a great week, everyone. Happy Reading!

Comments make me feel special, so go crazy! Just keep it clean and civil. Feel free to speak your mind (I always do), but be aware that I will delete any offensive comments.
P.S.: Don't panic if your comment doesn't show up right away. I have to approve each one before it posts to prevent spam. It's annoying, but it works!

You can send your nominations in today until midnight PST.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't very clear about that, but where I can catch it, I will! :) So go ahead and send them in!
Susan, could the book your son is looking for be SUPER FAST, OUT OF CONTROL by Louis Sachar. It seems to have a bunch of the elements although there is a Suicide Hill and Louis Sachar is certainly a popular author that teachers seem to favor for group reads. Here's the link at Amazon:

Amy - Okay, thanks. I probably read your email wrong. I will definitely send in my nominations tonight.
ReplyDeleteKay - You are a lifesaver. My son was SO excited when I showed him the Amazon link. This is the book we've been looking for! Thanks SO much.
I love how you did your blog but one thing i am confused with is how did you make the labels? i know that you go to the add gadget then labels, i just dont know how you name them and stuff! or what?! help!
ReplyDeleteNo problem, Susan. I'm glad that was the book. I have a lot of practice at work going hunting for the exact book with minimal amounts of info. He actually gave quite a few clues.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the award, Susan!
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying your site. Hey, have you read/reviewed Austenland? I read it today and had mixed feelings -- loved the first half, but somehow wasn't satisfied by the ending.
Hi Shelby - When you're typing your post in Blogger, you can create labels for it using the box that says "Labels for this post e.g. scooters, vacations, fall, etc." This box appears right under the box where you type and to the right of where it says "Post Options." Blogger automatically groups together all posts that have the same labels.
ReplyDeleteThen, if you want your labels to appear on your blog as a kind of directory, you have to add the "Labels" option in the "Layout" section of your blog. Like you said, you go to whatever section you want the labels in (right sidebar, left sidebar, the bottom of your blog, etc.), click "Add a Gadget," then "Labels." A list of your labels should automatically appear. If you haven't labeled any posts, I'm guessing nothing will show up. If you have, you should have a list of labels appear where you placed it.
I hope that makes sense. If you still have questions, let me know!
Kay - That's funny that you think he gave a lot of clues, because I told him there was no way I could find a book based on that little bit of information. Thankfully, I know where to find a lot of librarians/teachers/readers and I was pretty sure one of you all would recognize it. I'm so glad you did!
Jane - You're welcome. You know I think you're an excellent writer - at least you should know.
I haven't read Austenland yet. I need to. I've been reading so many review books that I'm woefully behind in my other reading. I own the book - I just need to read it.
Susan, Thanks so much for the award and the nice things you said about my blog. I always enjoy both of yours too!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the award. I really enjoy your blog - I'm always so impressed with your reviews.
ReplyDeleteSusan - send me your email address to ces@candacesalima.com and I'll get you added to the Mormon Bloggers Speak Out bloggers. Thanks.
