And Now ... A "Selfie"

In honor of my love for Delia Ephron's The Girl with the Mermaid Hair (see last post), I offer you ... a selfie:

Yes, it's gruesome, but, like all my other scars, this one says something about me. It screams:

I am scarred.

I am flawed.

I am strong.

I am a survivor.

  1. It screams OUCH! You're a brave one, that you are!!

    Heal well, friend!

  2. There's the best part:

    I am a survivor.

    Enough said. Hugs.

  3. I would definitely add you are brave! Nothing like cancer and surgery to scare the best of us. AND you are woman enough to post your scars. You are so cool!

  4. I just finished Little Bee. Have you read it yet? In the first chapter, the young girl says... I ask you right here please to agree with me that a scar is never ugly. That is what the scar makers want us to think. But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them. We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived.

    You're gorgeous.

  5. Gaye and Melissa - I don't know about brave - I just kind of gritted my teeth and did what had to be done. It's nothing compared to what those with serious forms of cancer have to deal with. Still, it was scary and I'm glad that at least some of it is over.

    Kay - Absolutely :)

Sue - I haven't read LITTLE BEE yet, but what a gorgeous quote. Thanks so much for sharing it.

  6. Those kind of battle scars are terrible and beautiful.

  7. Susan, I would post my TWO scars (one on breast and one in armpit) from my 2008 breast cancer surgery but it is kinda difficult and be modest. However, when I am changing at the gym, I consider them a Badge of Courage and now claim the title Breast Cancer Survivor with humility and praise to God. My mother was seven months from breast cancer diagnosis to death at age 57, so my adventure was a bit daunting.

From everything I have heard, I understand that if you HAVE to have cancer, thyroid cancer is the least aggressive and most likely to be non-life-threatening.

I pray that you have a speedy recovery and no recurrence.

  8. It really doesn't LOOK that bad, but I'm guessing it FEELS plenty bad! I hope you are feeling better though. Sounds like you are one tough cookie. I'd be the biggest wimp ever.

Comments make me feel special, so go crazy! Just keep it clean and civil. Feel free to speak your mind (I always do), but be aware that I will delete any offensive comments.

P.S.: Don't panic if your comment doesn't show up right away. I have to approve each one before it posts to prevent spam. It's annoying, but it works!
