Top Ten Tuesday, Or, A Rebel I Am Not
1:00 AM
I had so much fun doing Top Ten Tuesday—a literary list-y meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish— last week that I'm back for more! This week's topic did give me pause, though. It's this: Top Ten Series I'd Like to Start But Haven't Yet. If it was Top Ten Series I've Started But Haven't Finished, I could go on for ages. In fact, I almost decided to go that route anyway, but I didn't want to be too much of a rebel on my second-ever Top Ten Tuesday. Instead, I racked my brain and came up with the following:
1. Graceling by Kristin Cashore -- I've heard so much about this series that I just have to try it out for myself. Soon, I swear!
2. The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss -- There are only two books in this series so far, but they're HUGE. I need to read them, but I'm waiting for a nice long plane ride ...
3. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin -- Another fantasy series that I've been hearing about for eons (it seems like). I bought a copy of A Game of Thrones at a Border's going-out-of-business sale (*sniff*) and still haven't cracked it open. One of these days ...
4. The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper -- This is an old children's (YA?) fantasy series that I've been wanting to delve into for awhile now. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.
5. Heather Wells mysteries by Meg Cabot -- I haven't read anything by Cabot because she seems a little too chick lit-y, if you know what I mean. Still, I think these sound like fun. Plus, I totally agree with the titles: Size 12 is Not Fat; Size 14 is Not Fat Either; etc.
6. Thunder Point by Robyn Carr -- I've mentioned this one before, but since I still haven't started the series (even though I've got a copy of the first book, which doesn't come out for another few weeks), I'm going to mention it again. I'm looking forward to stepping into another warm, friendly Carr community, this time in my old stomping grounds, the Pacific Northwest.
7. Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta -- I loved Jellicoe Road and have been hearing good things about this children's fantasy series.
8. Millenium by Stieg Larsson -- Everyone and her brother has read this series, which starts with Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I've heard good things about the books and need to try them out ASAP.
9. Virals by Kathy Reichs -- I love Reichs' Temperance Brennan series and I've been meaning to get started on her YA series. Reviews I've read about the latter have been mixed, but I still want to try the books and see what I think.
10. Study by Maria V. Snyder -- I've been wanting to read this trilogy since it first came out and just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Phew! That was tough. So, I noticed that most of the series on my list are sci fi/fantasy. Wonder why that is? Some of those books are seriously large and that does give me pause, although I'm not afraid of tackling a chunkster (I like big books and I cannot lie ...). So, yeah. Interesting.
What about you? Which series are on your Must-Read-As-Soon-As-I-Make-the-Time list? Any good ones that I should add to my list?

Ow you should pick up the Kingkiller books they are not as long as they look because they are sooooo goood. Also Millenium by Stieg GOOOD.
ReplyDeleteI see possibilities for a Study read-a-long there are a few more people having that on on their list.
Thanks for dropping by :)
Patrick Rothfuss - one of my favourite authors if you're into long winded epic fantasy. His books aren't short but they're fantastic.
ReplyDeleteFinnikin of the Rock was fantastic, but it's so involved that I think it's best to read all of them back to back. I love Meg Cabot and have read most of her books. The Heather Wells series is really funny, as are most of her books. She's definitely original. Good luck :) ~daphne
ReplyDeleteI love Meg Cabot, but haven't read that series yet. The Millenium books were great!! I was obsessed while I was reading them... the first book starts out a tad slow at first so try to read past the first 20 pages before you decide :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by My TTT
New follower here! I'll put in a plug for both Patrick Rothfuss and Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series. Rothfuss is an amazing writer -- beautiful prose as well as incredible storytelling and amazingly intricate worldbuilding. (The audiobooks are really well read, too. My daughter and I listen to them on the way to her community college classes.)
ReplyDeleteCooper's books are wonderful, but be forewarned: the first book doesn't have the same feel as the remaining four. You might want to start with the second book (The Dark is Rising), then go back for the first Over Sea, Under Stone before you read the third. The characters in the first two books don't overlap, with one exception, until the third book.
The Study books nearly made my list, and would have if it were longer. I have the first two, I think.
Thank you for stopping by my list earlier -- I'm glad you did!
I love the Heather Wells series, more than the few other Meg Cabot books I've read. Maybe it's the murder mystery thrown in with a funny narrator.
ReplyDeleteI want to ge to the Dragon Tattoo series, but am daunted by the size. I have the 1st two in paperback if you need copies. You know, along with the 5 books I need to return to you (have read them all!) Shannon gave the Drago Tattoo books to me with her recommendation. And I want to watch the movie(s) but always like the read the book first. Did you hear the Johnsons moved to San Fransisco last week?
Otherwise there are some new series to give me ideas here...
I'm with you on 1 and 4; I've read Graceling, just none of the others. It was a really good book! Thanks for stopping by earlier!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of putting the Millenium trilogy on my list too. Everyone I know who's read them has loved them. Great list!
ReplyDeleteOkay, so if I was giving advice as which ones to focus on first, I'd definitely recommend the Graceling books and the Heather Wells series. Both totally different reads, but oh so good! Thanks for stopping by my blog :)
ReplyDeletetuesdays are my favorite post days! i love seeing your list of books to read!! you rock! :)
ReplyDeleteAhh! Read Graceling right away! It was one of those reads I couldn't put down. Also, if you have an e-reader, Kathy Reichs' Shift (the first in the Virals series) is on sale for 2.99 at the Kindle store right now! Just saw that this morning. ;)
ReplyDeleteOh boy, Graceling AND The Lumatere Chronicles?! You're in for a treat this year! Two of the absolute best series I started reading in 2012!
ReplyDeleteGreat List! Thanks for the welcome and comment over at my blog. bookbloggerparadise.blogspot.com. I an now a follower of you!
ReplyDeleteChelsea
I hope you like the Graceling series! I love the first two books. I still need to read Bitterblue, though.
ReplyDeleteAnd, you listed a few that I want to read as well. Alas, they didn't make my list, though, because I have way too many series I need to start, lol.
My TTT Post
Thanks for visiting my blog! Your post cracked me up. :)
ReplyDeleteI completely forgot about Graceling - I need to read, those, too. And while I own the first five books of George RR Martin, I have yet to read more than 30 pages. They just sit on my bookshelf, taunting and intimidating me.
Stephanie (Go Flash Go) @ Read, Rinse, Repeat
Here's my Top Ten
I hope you really GRR Martin! I read him years ago and am getting ready to start a reread. I started Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but put it aside and haven't gone back to it. I need to.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Literary, etc.
I think my comment was eaten by the comment monster. so here we go again: I hope you like Martin's books! I read them years ago and am looking forward to rereading them. I started on Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but it aside. I'm hoping to finish it soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Literary, etc.
Oh shoot, I forgot all about the Graceling series! I've heard great things about it though and can't wait to read it for myself. Great list! :)
ReplyDeleteI loved Graceling! I didn't much care for Fire but it was still decent. But if you don't get to anything else on this list, make sure you get to Game of Thrones! Just pure brilliance!
ReplyDeleteI just decided to go ahead and reply to the prompt of Top Ten Series I've Started But Haven't Finished. I'm a rebel myself!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! The Kingkiller Chronicles (and the Song of Ice and Fire books for that matter) are not as 'big' as they look. They're both far too quick reads!
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my blog! This is only my second TTT to do as well, and there are so many people who participate and it's hard to go through them all! Anyhow, I actually haven't read any of the ones on your list, though I know my husband enjoyed The Dark Is Rising series. I considered putting that one on my list.
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE The Lumatere Chronicles! One of my favorites for sure. Also Snyder's Poison Study series. Love Ylena and Valek. I couldn't make it past the first Millennium book. Those freaked me out! But so many people love them. And if I can find the time, I want to read The Name of the Wind this year too. Great list. Thanks for stopping by mine!
ReplyDeleteI also had A Song of Ice and Fire on my list.
ReplyDeleteThe Heather Wells mysteries sound good to me too, but like you the whole chick-lit thing that Meg Cabot has going makes me nervous... I have gotten over it a bit, so maybe I will give them a try.
I grabbed Finnikin of the Rock for my Kindle a few weeks back, so I'm looking forward to digging into The Lumatere Chronicles one of these days, too. The Dark Is Rising has also been sitting on my shelf waiting for my attention for a long time now. Yet another two series I need to start!
ReplyDeleteI really liked Poison Study and am planning on reading the next two very soon. The Graceling and A Song of Ice and Fire series are both great. The Dark is Rising! That makes me so nostalgic. I really need to reread that (and Alexander's Prydain Chronicles. They're linked together in my mind just because I read them both around the same time period.). And I agree completely about needing to read The Lumatere Chronicles.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe how I blanked on A Song of Ice & Fire as well as Graceling! I'm prone to forgetting about those two for some reason. I tested Finnikin of the Rock out last year, but it's one of those high fantasy books that intimidated me. I should give it another go some time, because I hear the series is quite good.
ReplyDeleteGraceling was good but I didn't love it so I wouldn't rush into it if I were you. Thank you so much for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of some of these, but I've heard the Graceling series is AMAZING. Thanks for sharing and stopping by!
ReplyDeleteI've read only the first book in the 'Millennium' series, 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo', and it was AMAZING!!! You should definitely check it out, it's such a gripping story! (which, I think the movie didn't do justice to). 'Graceling' is on my list, too, I plan to read it maybe this month or the next one. And 'The Song Of Ice In Fire' is on my TBR list, but didn't end up in my TTT list, because I'm just so intimidated by both it's length and the plot! I just haven't made my mind to read it anytime soon))
