Top Ten Tuesday: Literary Twins

My Tuesday is shaping up to be a busy one, but I didn't want to miss out on participating in my favorite weekly blogging event.  Top Ten Tuesday is always a lot of fun.  It's a great way to find new blogs, revisit old favorites, and get lots of great reading recommendations.  Who cares if your TBR list is already miles long?  If you want to participate (and you SO do), go on over to The Broke and the Bookish and read up on how the meme works.  Then make your own list and have a good time checking out other lists around the book blogosphere!

Today's topic is: Top Ten Books With __________ Characters.  I decided to fill in the blank with "Twin."  My mother is an identical twin; maybe that's why I've always been fascinated with twins.  Whatever the reason, I read a lot of books with such characters, so here's a list of the first ten that came to mind.

Top Ten Books With Characters Who Are Twins/Multiples

1.  The Shining by Stephen King—In honor of Halloween, I had to include one of the most iconic—not to mention creepiest—literary/movie twins of all time.  Redrum!

2.  Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling—On to the most lovable literary twins, Fred and George Weasley.  It's impossible not to be charmed by these mischief-loving brothers.

3.  The Bobbsey Twins series by Laura Lee Hope—I adored these books as a child!

4.  Sweet Valley High series by Francine Pascal—Here's another blast from the past.  I inhaled these silly high school stories about Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, twins who are identical but have very different personalities.  Their various dramas kept me thoroughly engrossed as a young reader.

5.  Two Little Girls in Blue by Mary Higgins Clark—I haven't read much MHC in recent years, but I used to be a mega fan.  In fact, this book is one of the first I reviewed after starting this blog.  It's about a couple whose 3-year-old twin girls are kidnapped from their home.  The story is a mystery/thriller about the race to find and save the children.

6.  How the Light Gets In by Louise Penny—I love the Armand Gamache series and this book, the ninth installment, is my favorite so far.  The story revolves around the puzzling murder of a mysterious woman.  The victim and her siblings are based on a real group of multiples who were cruelly exploited by their parents.  It's an engrossing mystery that asks some important questions.

7.  In the Woods by Tana French—The Irish writer's debut mystery/thriller features a young murder victim who is a twin.  French's books are always can't-look-away compelling.

8.  The Distant Hours by Kate Morton—Like most (all?) of Morton's novels, this one features a crumbling old house and the eccentric people who live there.  In this case, it's a pair of spinster twins.  Morton's books are always great reads.

9.  The Ice Twins by S.K. Tremayne—This shivery psychological thriller is about a couple grieving after the death of one of their identical twins.  When the surviving daughter claims she's her dead sister, things start to get a little strange ...

10.  Untwine by Edwidge Danticat—I haven't actually read this one yet, but it sounds excellent.  It concerns a teen girl who wakes up in a hospital after an accident and has no idea what has happened to her parents or her twin sister.

There you have it.  Have you read any of these?  Which awesome twin books am I missing?  Who are your favorite literary twins/multiples?  Leave me a comment and I'll gladly return the favor.

Happy TTT!

    1. I was having a hard time coming up with anything for the list, so I'm glad twins finally came to me :) It was a fun topic to do!

  2. I'm trying to think of all the twins I know . . . Most are fraternal twins, not identical. I think my daughter may have identical twins in her class this year though. At least one of them. I enjoy books about twins, especially identical ones. These is a great list! I love the Weasley twins. :-) And I grew up reading the Bobbsey Twins thanks to my grandmother. My mom and aunt just gave me a bunch of old Bobbsey Twin books, as a matter of fact. I think some were written after the author's death by another author, but I'm not sure. I haven't had a chance to take a close look at them yet. The Ice Twins sounds like a lot of fun to read! Thank you for sharing!

    1. How fun! I read somewhere that the Bobbsey Twin books were actually written by a bunch of different people and published under the name Laura Lee Hope. I don't even think she was an actual person!

  4. Awesome list. I didn't know some of these books had twins in them. I need to read The Ice Twins. I've been eying it for awhile.

    1. THE ICE TWINS is pretty chilling (see what I did there?). The premise is creepy, the setting is isolated, the whole thing is just unsettling as can be ... It would be a good Halloween read :)

  6. Fred and George are my favorite literary twins. I also liked The Thirteenth Tale and found that interesting.

I used to be a huge MHC fan too, but I didn't like Two Little Girls in Blue. I didn't think it was up to same caliber as Clark's other novels. I loved the concept, but I hated the execution.

I'll have to check out the others on your list.

    1. I read THE THIRTEENTH TALE a reeallly long time ago, so I didn't even remember that it had twins in it!

It's been a long time since I read TWO LITTLE GIRLS IN BLUE, so I don't remember much about it truthfully. I do feel that MHC's books have declined a lot over the years. The books I read by her in high school were the best ones. She's 89, though, so I'm just impressed that she's still writing!

  8. This is a great idea for this week's prompt! I can't think of any others to add (I'm trying, but nothing comes to mind), but I LOVE Fred and George. Always.

    1. I know! I feel like every other book I read has twins in it, but when it came to actually listing them I could only come up with these and a couple more.

  9. You gotta love The Shining and those Weasley's :)

I can't really think of any others. I haven't come across too many twins in books. ~Aleen

  10. Ooh, The Thirteenth Tale was creepy. I love the twins in The Thirteenth Child, though, and I just read The Chemist, with twins that are identical but sooo different.

    1. I might need to re-read THE THIRTEENTH TALE. I don't remember anything about it. I've read THE CHEMIST, but I don't remember twins in that one -- my memory is not the best! I haven't read THE THIRTEENTH CHILD, but it looks really good.

  11. This is such a cool idea! I don't have any twins in my family, but I was completely obsessed with them when I was a kid. Not surprising, the main books I've heard of on this list are the ones for young readers, but there are some I didn't realize had twins in, like the Tana French and Louise Penny books. I have to admit, though, Halloween or not, I'm not brave enough for The Shining!

    1. It's just the one Louise Penny book, but it's a really intriguing novel about multiples. Based on a real family, too. I thought it was fascinating!

The Shining is not for everyone :) I remember the movie a lot better than the book, but I know both are super creepy!

  14. I honestly don't think I've read too many books about twins! Harry Potter, definitely, but nothing else comes to mind. Oh! There was a YA book, it was on my shelf... there is a girl and her twin is still trapped inside of her... something... I can't remember exactly, but now I want to go find it, lol. I think everyone thought the other twin died at birth, but she was absorbed into the other's consciousness. It's going to bug me until I figure it out! Great topic! Happy reading. :)

I love that you chose hiking! My husband is the one that got me into hiking, and I've found that I really enjoy it. I haven't read Into the Wild, but I do love the movie. I also didn't know about the book Wild until it was mentioned on Gilmore Girls, lol. Happy reading!

    3. LOL. Totally fine. I was a little confused, especially since I apparently said I liked hiking! Ha ha. I have read INTO THE WILD (it's so sad!), though, so that part made sense :)
