TTT: My Bookish Tells

With all this self-isolation, I have completely lost track of the days of the week.  Other than Sunday, when we now hold worship services in our home instead of at the church building, each day is exactly like the other.  Know what I'm talking about?  Penn Holderness does:

Needless to say, I'm very proud of myself for remembering that today is Tuesday!  Yippee!  Time for my favorite weekly meme.  If you're not familiar with Top Ten Tuesday, you can educate yourself by clicking on over to That Artsy Reader Girl, where you can get all the info you need.  Join in the fun by creating your own list, then hopping around the book blogosphere to view other people's lists.  It's an enjoyable way to beat boredom, spread some love, and find more books to read.  I'm averaging a book a day right now, so I'm definitely up for new recommendations!

Today's topic is a fun one—Top Ten Signs You're a Book Lover.  I couldn't think of anything really unique that marks me as a bibliophile, but here goes:

1.  If you don't know me and you've never been to my house, your first clue that I love to read would be my license plate.  Above is my current one, but I've also had:  BOOKISH, NOZNABK, ADDLED ("She has read too many books and it has addled her brain."), etc.

2.  Bookish stuff—Another clue would be my bookish t-shirts (my favorite is for a local indie—it says, "Peace, Love, Books" on the back), mugs, artwork, etc.

3.  My blog—I've been posting reviews on my blog since 2006.  When I publish, links are also posted to my Facebook and Twitter.  I also hand out blog business cards at conferences and bookish events.  So, I'd say most people who know me, even a little bit, are aware that I run a book review blog.

4.  My home library—My house is full of books.  There are overfilled bookcases in our family room, the game room, my bedroom, my husband's office, my daughter's room, etc.  My little office nook is crammed full of them (See above.  I didn't bother tidying up so you could get a real feel for the bookish chaos—you're welcome!)  Several people have told me they've never seen so many books in a building that wasn't a library.  LOL.  What most people don't know is that the closet in my guest room is also stuffed full of review books in file boxes.  Houston, I *may* have a problem!

5.  My Goodreads TBR—I've heard other readers lament that they have several hundred "want to read" books listed on GR.  I have 5,549 and counting.  If that's not a sign that I'm a *little* book crazy, I don't know what is!

6.  I have THREE library cards—I'm lucky to live in a place where I have access to two large library systems, so I have cards to both the city and county libraries.  I also keep my daughter's county card on hand in case I need to check out more than the allowed 50 books.  Yes, it has happened.  More than once.

(my favorite Arizona indie)

7.  I've never met a bookstore I didn't like—Seriously.  Be it bright, clean, and modern or musty, dusty, and chaotic, I love me a bookstore.  Chances are excellent that I'll come out of any bookstore with at least one treasure.

8.  I'm never bored—Unlike most people, I have no problem waiting in airports, doctors' offices, carpool lines, stop-and-go traffic, etc.  As long as I have a book nearby (and you better believe I always do), I'm perfectly happy to hang around.  Even as a kid, I never needed to be entertained.  Having a book in hand means I'm never bored.

9.  I don't watch t.v.—Ask me about the hottest show on the small screen and you'll get a blank stare.  I rarely watch t.v, at least without a book or cross-stitch project on my lap.  The only time you'll really find me paying full attention to the boob tube is when I'm folding laundry and even then, I've started listening to audiobooks instead.

10.  Hermione Granger is my spirit animal—Bookish characters (and real people) are my favorite because I just get them!

There you go, ten reasons that make it obvious I'm a little book obsessed.  What about you?  What are your tells?  I'd truly love to know.  Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on yours.

Happy TTT!

    2. Thanks! I never thought I'd be the kind of person to want a vanity license plate, but it's been fun to have bookish ones. I've gotten lots of compliments on them over the years.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I love your list! I relate to many of these. Bookstores are so much fun to explore, especially the independent ones. They all have a different atmosphere. Thanks for visiting Long and Short Reviews!

    1. I agree! Even Changing Hands, my favorite local indie, has two branches and their vibes are completely different. I love all bookstores, but I definitely prefer the Tempe location of Changing Hands to the Phoenix one.

  3. Wow! A bookish license plate. You are next level. I am more covert, and for me, I show my love of reading via the time I dedicate. (don't tell, but people in other states have shared their numbers with me, so I can borrow from different eLibraries.)

    1. I'm next level? If you're borrowing other people's library card numbers so you can borrow a wider variety of e-books, YOU'RE next level! LOL. I've never even thought of doing that :)

  4. I love your list. I also love your licence plate, that is so awesome. So many similarities, I have over 4000 books on my Goodreads TBR and do not watch much television either. As I read these, I was nodding along with most of them.

    1. This is my favorite bookish license plate so far, so I've kept it for several years. It's fun to proclaim my literary love this way!

Sounds like we have lots of bookish habits in common. That's why I love book people. We just get each other :)

  6. Oh my gosh, I LOVE your license plate! And oh, wow, you have a serious Goodreads TBR! I thought mine was bad, but now it's like I have permission to add just a few more books, because it can obviously be worse. ;) You also beat me with the library cards, because I only have two lol. Love your list!

    1. Pretty much anytime I hear about a book I think I would like, I throw it on my Goodreads TBR list. That way, I don't forget about it. It doesn't necessarily mean I'll ever read it, but it's on my list in case I want to check it out. Only about the first 50 books on my TBR are in want-to-read order and I keep changing the order, so my lists are basically always in flux. I don't take them too seriously!

      Thanks for coming by, Sammie!

  7. Oh my gosh your license plate! It's so cool! When I'm home for the holidays and back with my family, I do that multiple library card thing too. I borrow my mum's, my sister's AND my dad's 😂

    1. Sometimes extra cards come in handy :) Back before my daughter entered high school and started having such a heavy academic load, she would read like crazy - even faster than I did. We needed both cards to keep up with our habits :) These days, she uses her city library card and I keep her county one just in case I need it!

    1. True! Everybody and their dog has the same kind and color of minivan that I do. I actually do check the license plate before I get into a silver Sienna. I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally tried to get into the wrong one!

I'm pretty sure I told you that I wasn't responsible for the avalanche that could ensue if you opened the guest room door. If you did so, it was at your own peril :)

      Love you, Pee Wee!

    1. It absolutely should! Maybe not as full as my house, but still ... if I don't see any books at someone's house, I automatically assume their aliens. What other excuse could there be for having NO BOOKS in the house?

I'm glad you like the license plate. If you see it out and about in Utah, flag me down. I'd love to meet you :)

  13. Thanks for visiting my TTT earlier.

Would love to have a number plate that says I'm a reader but that's not possible in Europe, at least not the countries I've lived in (Germany, Belgium, the UK, the Netherlands in that order).
But my rooms look just like yours. LOL And I nodded to all of your points. Yes, that's also me!

Happy Reading and talk to you again!

    1. Vanity license plates must be an American thing. Go figure! Some of them are really clever and fun, others are ambiguous, and still others are super obnoxious. It costs a bit more to have a personalized license plate, but I like mine, plus I paid extra for a plate that supports education with money and exposure. There are a bunch of organizations that offer plates - a portion of the cost is donated to that organization.

      Thanks for coming by, Marianne!

    2. There are countries here where you can choose part of your plate but, in Germany, for instance, the beginning shows your district and then you have a letter or two and then numbers. Sometimes you can choose your letters.

  14. I love your office nook! Do you do B&B? LOL

It's funny, my brother (a non-reader) once said to me, 'You've never been bored in your life have you?' I thought about it for a second and then had to admit that I had not. I feel like that is a blessing to be honest.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Aw, thanks, Cath. You can come B&B with me anytime - just don't open the guest closet door. I'm not responsible for whatever avalanche might ensue!

I agree - it is a blessing to be able to entertain yourself and never be bored.

    1. Ha ha. Well, mostly it's because I live in a place where I have access to both a city library system and a county. It's nice because between the two of them, I can usually find any book I'm looking for.

    1. Ha ha. I like my county library (which is about 20 mins. from my house) a lot better than the branch of my city library (which is 5 mins. from my house). I mainly go to the former because it's big, has pretty scenery (it's surrounded by a nature preserve), and I like the way it's organized. It's only when I can't find a book I want at the county library that I go to the city one. I am glad I have access to both (and for free). I agree, though - I'd go to ANY library right now. I miss borrowing books.

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Katherine!

  20. Susan, that is a seriously impressive home library - I am rather jealous! I am also pleased you are still being able to hold your own church services at home. My church has been live streaming services on Facebook.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Actually, not even half of my home library is shown in the photo - it's scattered around my house. Believe it or not, my desk bookshelves are full of YA and MG review books ONLY and it was several years ago that I organized them that way. Crazy, huh?

Interestingly, a couple years ago the prophet/president of my church started a campaign promoting "church-supported, family-centered" worship and study. The Church had been implementing that philosophy slowly and then, WHAM. This happens. Now, each family is encouraged to have their own worship meetings in their homes. We don't invite other people because of the quarantine, but we do meet together as a family and spend about an hour singing hymns, studying scriptures, having Gospel discussions, praying, etc. It's been nice, although we do miss seeing our church family every week.

I'm glad other churches are making an effort to live stream and broadcast services. Faith is even more important at this crazy time.

      Thanks for coming by, Jessica!

    2. Oops - I said that wrong. It's "HOME-centered, Church-supported."

  25. I love this! I feel like we have so much in common after reading your list. My house is packed with books and I rarely watch tv. The only two that would apply to me is the license plate and I have not read Harry Potter so I don't really know Hermione :)

    1. We're like reading twins :) Only, you HAVE to read Harry Potter. It's such a fabulous series and Hermione is a character with whom all bookworms can relate. She's unabashed in her love for reading - just like us :)
