It's a Quarantine Top Ten Tuesday. Again.
11:16 AM
Well, it's another Tuesday in quarantine. How are you all holding up? We're doing fine over here. Not a lot has changed since last week and the week before that and the week before that, although apparently, things are going to start opening back up here in Arizona this week and next. My husband and sons are readying our jet skiis to hit the lake as soon as the gates open on Saturday. I know they're ready to bust out of quarantine for good, but I'm still not sure if a grand reopening of the world is a solid idea. It makes me nervous, I have to say.
In less controversial news, it's Tuesday again, time for my favorite bookish meme. If you haven't joined in the fun of Top Ten Tuesday yet, you really should. It's a great way to get involved in the book blogging community, visit favorite blogs, find new ones, discover fantastic-sounding books, and keep yourself entertained (something we all need right now). Click on over to That Artsy Reader Girl to get all the details.
Not gonna lie, I'm not totally feeling today's topic of the Last Ten Books I've Abandoned. I prefer to keep TTT a positive thing. Also, there's the little problem of my faulty memory—I honestly wouldn't be able to dredge up the names of the last ten books I DNF'd if I tried! Since I couldn't think of a creative way to spin the topic du jour, I'm just going to chatter generally about the Top Ten Reasons I Might Abandon a Book (in no particular order):
- The story is moving way too slllloooowwwwwlllllly and I'm bored with it. I've gotta have some action to keep me awake!
- The characters have no personality or they have personalities that grate on my nerves.
- The plot is too gory, violent, graphic, or disturbing. I DNF'd a book last night and one last week for this reason.
- The writing is unskilled, unpolished, or just downright terrible.
- My own moodiness. Sometimes books that would otherwise grab me just don't at a certain time, for no particular reason other than my mood.
- Too much cheese! When it comes to food, there is no such thing. Books are different, though. Too much corny, saccharine, or eye roll-worthy prose and/or dialogue and I'm out.
- Serial OCD. I've abandoned (or, rather, postponed) a number of books I've randomly grabbed at the library because I later discovered they were part of a series. I refuse to read books in a series out of order, even when other people swear up and down that they don't need to be read in order. Yes, they do, Karen! Yes. They. Do.
- I just don't care. Have you ever been in the middle of a book only to realize you really couldn't care less what happens next? This occurs to me fairly often, usually because the characters are unlikable or just too flat to really make me interested in what happens to them.
- Certain topics. There are topics I just don't like to read about, either because they make my blood boil or my stomach turn or my head/heart hurt. If I encounter these subjects in a novel, I almost always jump ship.
- Variety. I like to read several different genres, shuffling between them to keep my reading life interesting. If I start with a book and realize it's too similar to something else I've read lately, I'll usually abandon it, even if just for the time being.
So, there you have it, ten reasons I might abandon a book. Do any of my reasons resound with you? What makes you stop reading a book? Which have you DNF'd lately and why? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I'll gladly return the favor on yours.
Happy TTT!

My favorite here is I Just Don't Care. LOL. That happens to me quite often. Sometimes I push through even though I don't want to.
ReplyDeleteSame. Sometimes it surprises me to realize, especially in the middle of a book, that I'm so uninvested that I could totally put the book down and never pick it back up again and it wouldn't bother me at all! Like you, sometimes I push through, just to finish. Other times, I put the book down even if I'm halfway through. It just depends.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Deanna!
Ontario is starting to slowly open back up as well, and I have similar concerns to yours. Hope it goes well for all of us!
ReplyDeleteI just don't care is a great reason to DNF. I have that experience sometimes, too.
My TTT .
Yeah, I'm nervous about predictions about a "second wave" of the virus. I'm not sure we're even through the first wave. It's scary.
Delete"I just don't care" seems to be the reason everyone's responding to. LOL. It seriously is my top reason for abandoning a book, although the other reasons I listed are usually contributing factors.
Thanks for stopping by, Lydia!
I've had that happen where I just didn't care. It's always a bummer haha because I hate starting a book and not finishing, but sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do! Same with excessive goriness. I like a dark read once in a while but I don't need it to be crazy dark!
ReplyDeleteHope everything goes well with the reopenings, I worry about it too. Seems kinda soon giving the bad news still coming out. Breaking the jet skiis out sounds pretty good though!
Exactly! I don't mind a dark read, but there are certain graphic/gory elements that bother me more than others. Also, mood plays a part. Sometimes I just can't handle anything too dark.
DeleteYeah, the jet skiis have been very lonely lately! The boys are itching to ride them, but I'm afraid the lake's going to be crazy crowded on opening day. I'll wait to zip around in the water until it's a little less busy!
Thanks for stopping by, Greg!
Oh yes, 100% -- series MUST be read in order. I very very very rarely relax this, always for romance novels where it's only nominally a series.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way! I don't want any spoilers, even if they're minor ones. Also, I just feel like I'm missing something if I don't start a series at the beginning.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Nikki!
I'm completely on board about series reading in order. We totally agree on that! As to the other reasons, I can relate to them as well. My reading over the last few weeks has been fine as long as I'm reading a JD Robb book. Otherwise, not so much. I've gone through period like this before though - not as bad, but similar. Usually, if I can find the right series to read, I'll power through a complete series and come out on the other side with my reading mojo rebooted. Hoping that works this time.
ReplyDeleteI hear you. Sometimes you just need your comfort authors/series to get you through a slump. I hope it works this time.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Kay!
I like your take on this week's prompt! 100% agree with 'I don't care,' lol, I get to that point in a book sometimes!
ReplyDeleteRight? I'm kind of a tough reader to please, so this happens to me a lot :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Rabeeah!
You were in my head! We both had the same feelings about the topic. Spooky! My latest DNF reasons include pacing (which seems to be a big reason for a lot of people), politics in a book not about politics, and "don't care"/lack of interest.
ReplyDeleteHa ha. ESP for the win! My original idea was to do a TTT list of my favorite books set in abandoned places. Initially, I couldn't come up with many, but throughout the day, a bunch of them have popped into my mind. Ha ha. Oh well! I'll save that one for another time.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
I'm with you on annoying characters! That is one of the top reasons I'll give up on a book.
ReplyDeleteYes! I like quirky characters, but if they cross the line into annoying then I'm out. They can take over a book and make me not enjoy a read I otherwise would, you know?
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Tracy!
Yes, 'I just don't care' makes me give up reading a book more than any other reason. The author *has* to make you care what happens otherwise what is the point, and the older I get the more willing I am to stop reading because of that.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you and your family are well.
Absolutely! Sometimes the characters are so flat that they don't feel like real people, which makes me not care. Other times, they're so self-centered that I'm happy to leave them to their fate. In order to care, I have to have characters I feel for. Otherwise, it's a DNF for me.
DeleteI hope you and yours are also well. Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cath!
Bad writing is a BIIIIIIIIGG turn off for me. I just can't. But not caring about what happens next is also a sin that I am moving on.
ReplyDeleteRight? Sometimes it's so cringe-worthy I can't get past the first page. If I'm asking myself, "How did this get published?" it's a sure sign I'm going to DNF it.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Cindy!
Thanks for a more positive spin! I avoided the TTT topic this week because I don’t enjoy calling out books in a negative way just because I wasn’t the right reader. I really resonate with just not caring! Whenever my feelings of joy are overcome with that feeling of dread, I jump ship!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind criticizing a book in a review because that's part of my "the good, the bad, and the ugly" approach, but I think of TTT as a light, fun activity. I don't want to write a post full of reasons I didn't like certain books. Depressing! And I agree with you, some of the ones I've DNF'd or given bad "grades" were just not the right book for ME. Doesn't mean other people won't like them.
DeleteThanks for coming by!
I also don't remember books I DNF all that well, often because I prefer to remember good books and not the bad ones.
ReplyDeleteAll your reasons for not finishing a book are mine as well especially the one about violent and disturbing content. I really don't want to fill my head with distrubing images.
But I really do not need a good reason to stop reading a book, if I don't like it, that's enough.
Have a lovely day.
Sometimes I'll read on through violent/disturbing content if the story is gripping enough, but I always wonder WHY I'm subjecting myself to that! It lingers in my head and soul, so I really do TRY not to read anything too violent/graphic/disturbing.
DeleteI agree - you don't need a reason to stop reading a book. If it's just not working for you, that's reason enough!
Thanks for stopping by, Lissa!
Yes they do, Karen!! hahaha.. I totally agree on that point. ALWAYS read books in a series in order!! I like that you kept this post positive... such a good thing right now! Have a wonderful week!! <3
ReplyDeleteI agree - we all need all the positivity we can get right now!
DeleteNot everyone gets the hard and fast rule of only reading series in order. I'm glad some of us understand how important it is! Karen, unfortunately, just doesn't get it ... :)
Thanks for coming by, Leslie!
All these points resound with me, Susan. I also like to read series in order but one is not always lucky as I have to depend on library books. Thankfully, my preference is for vintage mysteries where series order doesn't matter as much as it does in modern detective series.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog and leaving a link.
Good point. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Libraries are awesome, but they don't always have every book you need.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Neeru!
I don't read romance or erotica, so if there's too much sex and it is too graphic, I will stop reading it!
ReplyDeleteSame! That's a tough one to predict sometimes, too. You don't always know what's coming in a book, especially one that isn't obviously a romance.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Davida!
As you know, my TTT didn't exactly follow the rules, either.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your reasons for abandoning books like that. Totally great list. And I would NEVER read books in a series out of order, never ever.
Thanks for visiting my page earlier.
Glad I'm not the only one with Serial OCD! I just don't want to risk missing something or getting surprise information ahead of time. That ruins books for me.
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Marianne!
I'm with you on ALL these reasons. I think you hit all the reasons I'd abandon a book, too. Very fun take on this theme. :D
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, when I started writing this post I thought I would have at least 50 reasons, but really, these 10 cover every situation in which I've abandoned a book!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!
My mood also affects the books I read! I actually DNF'd Salt to the Sea TWICE before I gave it one last chance, and I ended up absolutely loving it!! I think we're not always in the mood for certain books, but that doesn't mean it won't change! Great post!
ReplyDeleteMakes sense. SALT TO THE SEA is a heavy book. Not one you'd want to read in certain moods. I loved it as well, though! It's my favorite of the author's novels.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Breanna!
I need to have some action too. There have been multiple occassions where I've stopped reading because I got bored because nothing was happening.
ReplyDeleteRight? There doesn't have to be a murder on every page to keep me interested, but there has to be SOMETHING!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Jess!
Oh I love this take on the topic!
ReplyDeleteI totally get what you mean about not caring about the characters! I've DNF'd a book at the 70% mark because the characters did something idiotic and I just didn't care to see the fallout.
And I am a big mood reader. There are times when I've put down a book I know I would enjoy if I had picked it up at a different time.
Seventy percent? Wow, you're hard core! LOL. I know what you mean, though. And, yes, I think mood plays a huge part in why certain books work at certain times and not at others. The nice thing about putting down a book is we can always pick it back up again if we want to!
DeleteThanks for coming by, Lauren!
Sloooow stories and terrible writing make me want to abandon books, too. Your topic "Top Ten Reasons I Might Abandon a Book" is so much fun! I'll have to remember it if I ever want to switch the TTT topic...
ReplyDeleteHere's my TTT list.
I seem to be switching up the TTT topics a lot lately :) Some of them just don't work for me; if I can think of a way to twist it, I do!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Lectrice!
I love your spin on this topic! I skipped it but if it comes up again I might have to borrow your take. We have a lot of common reasons for DNFing a book and in fact I just DNF'd one last week because I just didn't care. I might pick it up again because I know a lot of people who loved it but for now it just wasn't for me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, "I don't care" is a big reason for me. If the characters aren't speaking to me or the plot is holding my attention or the writing just isn't engaging, then I put the book down because I couldn't care less how it all ends up! Sad, but true.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Katherine!
Good take on the topic. I track my reading--otherwise I'd likely pick up the same books again.
ReplyDeleteSmart. I track the books I finish, but I don't note the ones I DNF, either permanently or temporarily. I should because I have a terrible memory and I have definitely picked up a permanent DNF because I totally forgot about it! LOL
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Lisa!
I think my top two reasons are when a book is slow and my mood. God forbid I hit both at the same time... then the book has no chance.
ReplyDeleteHa ha. I hear you!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Helen!
I like your spin on this topic! I'll DNF a book for a lot of these reasons, too. I've ditched a couple books last week solely over the action thing! If I get to 30% and feel like nothing's happened, it's a bad sign. The characters is definitely my number two reason. If I can't stand the main character, why would I want to spend 400 painful pages with them?! Love your reasons!
ReplyDeleteTotally. I have to have SOME action and I need characters that I care about. If they're selfish jerks, then I'm really not going to care about what happens to them.
DeleteThanks for coming by, Sammie!
All great reasons to abandon a book Susan. The last two books I abandoned were because of excessive foul language. A few swear words here or there that fit in to a character of plot are tolerable, but books where it is constant, I can not read.
ReplyDeleteI have to read books in order too! Even if people say you don't have to, I agree you really do need to!
ReplyDelete
