Top Ten Tuesday: Falling for Autumn, Vicariously

Unlike in beautiful New Hampshire (top photo), where I was vacationing last year around this time, or in the stunning Columbia River Gorge (bottom photo), where I was reared, here in the Phoenix area we don't really have Fall.  Sure, the temperature will retreat back into two-digit range sometime around November, but the leaves don't really change color, there's no briskness in the air, and the homey sight of smoke drifting out of chimneys into a bright Autumn sky is not something you see here in our desert.  I miss real Fall, the kind I adored while growing up in Washington and going to college in Utah.  Since I can't experience it without taking a drive, I'll have to do it vicariously through books (like I do a lot of things).  That's where this week's Top Ten Tuesday topic—Top Ten Book Covers That Give Off Fall Vibes—comes in.  My list is a mix of titles I've read and enjoyed, Fall books I loved as a kid and had fun reading to my own children, and a few that I'm looking forward to reading sometime soon.

If you want to join in the TTT fun, hop on over to That Artsy Reader Girl for all the details.

Top Ten Book Covers That Give Off Fall Vibes

Return to Virgin River by Robyn Carr—the newest in a series I enjoy but am behind in reading

Bitter River by Julia KellerMy Review

The Brutal Telling by Louise PennyMy Review

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown by Charles M. Schulz—Oh, the nostalgia!

A Separate Peace by John Knowles

Harvest Moon by Robyn Carr

Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman, illustrated by S.D. Schindler—one of my kids' favorite seasonal read alouds

Fall Leaves by Loretta Holland, illustrated by Elly MacKay

The Orphan of Cemetery Hill by Hester Fox

Pumpkin Everything by Beth LabonteJana mentioned this sweet romance in her post today and it sounds fun, especially since I love New Hampshire!

There you go, some book covers that really say Autumn to me.  What do you think of my picks?  Which covers say Fall to you?  What is Fall like where you live?  I'd truly love to know.  Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.

Happy TTT!

  1. Good choices! I love the Great Pumpkin [it's on my list, too] and Separate Peace is a lifelong favorite book.

    1. You can't beat good ole Charlie Brown! The book and movie have always been a big part of the Fall/Halloween season for me and my family.

      Thanks for coming by, Lisa!

  2. Wow, those photos are gorgeous!

Toronto is in about the same spot as far as autumn colours go this year. Just bits of brilliant colour here and there so far.

    My post.

    1. Well, I love children's books so I can't leave them out! Unfortunately, my kids are too old for picture books, so they don't get looked at much in my house. I'll have to save them for the grandkids ...

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carla!

  4. I am just really vicariously enjoying that shot of Multnomah Falls, Susan. So, so beautiful. When we lived in the Portland area so many years ago, I was entranced with the autumn colors. Our area of Texas doesn't have much in the way of fall leaves either - though we do have a few more than you guys. Multnomah Falls is one of my favorite places. Sigh. Oh, and nice covers...LOL!

    1. The Gorge is always beautiful, but in the Fall it's truly spectacular! I love Multnomah Falls in all seasons, of course - in the Fall, though? It's incredible. I agree - it's one of my favorite places on Earth. Nature is incredible, isn't it?

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Kay!

    1. Ha ha ha! I love pumpkin as well. Pumpkin cake bars are probably my favorite, but there's also pumpkin rolls, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin ...

I miss Fall a lot! I wish I lived in a place that had it. *Sigh*

    1. Thanks! I can take credit for the top photo as I snapped it with my phone when I was out walking near the AirBnB where we stayed in New Hampshire. I stole the Multnomah Falls one off the Internet. Shhhh, don't tell! I've seen the falls tons of times and have taken lots of photos of it but not as beautiful as this one.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Those photos are stunning. We came across a place exactly like that top one while touring in the nineties, it was somewhere in New York state. Really pretty covers too. I've read A Brutal Telling, autumn in Quebec, what's not to like? Autumn here in England is a delight, lots of rain at the moment but also crisp sunny days, berries everywhere, mist in the valley first thing in the morning. My favourite season.

  15. Here in New England we have real fall. It's my favorite season, so I am glad for that. I'm in the process of winding down my garden for the year to prepare for the coming colder months.

Thanks for sharing the beautiful photos from NH and OR. What a nice fall view.

Love your book list. Charlie Brown was on other blogs this week, too. I want to read Return to Virgin River and The Orphan of Cemetery Hill.

Thanks for visiting my blog today.

    1. My family and I visited New England this time last year. It rained a lot, but when it wasn't raining, we had some fabulous Fall color. The best color was in New Hampshire, but we also saw some beautiful scenes in Vermont, Connecticut, and Maine. Lucky you that you get to live there and enjoy all that beauty every day.

      Thanks for coming by, Cheryl!

    1. It's been 20 years since my husband dragged me to Arizona and I STILL complain about living here! The weather is just really tough for me. I need to suck it up, don't I? LOL.

I've actually never been to Santa Barbara (I've gotten close - my sister used to live in Camarillo), but I've heard it's absolutely beautiful. The pictures I've seen are gorgeous. I guess there's other scenery to compensate for not having Fall!

      Thanks for coming by, Tracy!

    1. I agree! Charlie Brown makes me happy and the books/movies have always been part of my family's holiday celebrations.

I'm going to do my Fall decorating this weekend, so that should help it feel like Fall - at least inside, where the air conditioning keeps things cool-ish :)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  19. The Louise Penny mystery cover gets my vote for what I think of as fall. In Santa Barbara we don't really get fall either, with only 1 or 2 trees in the neighborhood changing color. I do miss that from my college days in Connecticut where crisp fall day and leaves were abundant.

    1. I agree. The Penny books have great covers and great stories. She writes one of my favorite series of all time.

We do have some trees here that change color a little bit, but not many.

We were touring Yale University this time last year and there was some lovely color there, although we also got absolutely soaked from heavy rain during our tour!

  27. Great mix of covers. I love the bright leaves and bleak landscape shots equally well, but the cover for Bitter River really speaks to me. Mostly 'cause I want her outfit, but the mystery sounds intriguing too -- depends on whether I need to read the first book, though.

I also love that you pulled out an old school cover for A Separate Peace. It looks very accessible to me, suddenly.

    1. Ha ha. Right? I love the red coat and tall brown boots combo. I would totally wear that outfit!

The vintage cover is the one I remember from when I read A SEPARATE PEACE for the first time. I didn't realize there were so many others until I had to search for the one I wanted :)

Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, RS!
