Top Ten Tuesday: Five Fictional Favorites, Ten Great Quotes
12:32 PM
One of the many pleasures of reading is coming across great quotes. I love skillfully-crafted paragraphs, vividly-described passages, and cleverly-worded dialogue. They thrill me, truly, but I'm not good at remembering them or writing them down, which makes TTT topics like today's—Top Ten Memorable Things Book Characters Have Said—a bit difficult. So, I apologize in advance because the quotes I'm sharing today are very well-known and most of them will probably appear on other people's lists. Also, I had to Google all of them so if they're incorrect, you know who to blame!

Top Ten Memorable Things Five of My Favorite Book Characters Have Said
Atticus Finch
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”
“I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks.”
Jo March
Little Women series by Louisa May Alcott
“I keep turning over new leaves, and spoiling them, as I used to spoil my copybooks; and I make so many beginnings there never will be an end.”
“I want to do something splendid before I go into my castle--something heroic, or wonderful--that won't be forgotten after I'm dead. I don't know what, but I'm on the watch for it, and mean to astonish you all, some day. I think I shall write books, and get rich and famous; that would suit me, so that is my favorite dream.”
Albus Dumbledore
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
Anne Shirley
Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery
“Life is worth living as long as there's a laugh in it.”
“The world calls them its singers and poets and artists and storytellers; but they are just people who have never forgotten the way to fairyland.”
Hermione Granger
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
"Books! And cleverness! There are more important things—friendship and bravery."

Jo March is so relatable!
ReplyDeleteMy post: https://lydiaschoch.com/top-ten-tuesday-memorable-things-characters-have-said/
Isn't she? And for SOOOO many reasons...
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lydia!
I know these characters and I read them in books but I haven't quite remember these quotes. Atticus Finch - lots of wisdom from him, he really is a great role model.
ReplyDeleteI find it quite amusing that Hermione Granger seems to keep reminding Harry and Ron about reading - she's too smart for both of them.
Have a lovely day.
For real! Harry and Ron are lucky to have her as a friend and I think they realize that pretty quickly :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lissa!
Those are some great quotes! Anne Shirley has some great lines even early on in the books. That's something I wasn't expecting when I read it... I thought she would have to grow into her inspirational quotes.
ReplyDeleteMy TTT: https://bookwyrmknits.com/2021/11/09/top-ten-tuesday-memorable-things-characters-have-said/
Nope! She's very wise, even from the beginning :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Nicole!
You chose some amazing quotes. I love all of them! :D
ReplyDeleteMe too! I love all these character precisely because they have so much wisdom to impart :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!
That Anne quote is so good! She is such a fabulous character who lived live to its fullest and found beauty in everyday things.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. Her effusiveness about EVERYTHING always reminds me of how wonderful life really is if you just keep looking for the beautiful and good.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
A wonderful list! Atticus Finch is correct though in stating that the only kind of folks there are in the world are folks.
ReplyDeletePam @ Read! Bake! Create!

That's my favorite of his quotes because it's so simple and true. We're all more alike than different. If we could just remember that, the world would be a much kinder place!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Pam!
I love Anne! Great choices.
ReplyDeleteMe too. She's such a memorable character!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cindy!
Those Dumbledore quotes are delightful.

Aren't they? He's a great, wisdom-filled character!
DeleteThanks for popping in, Astilbe!
So many good ones here. I really like the Atticus Finch picks.
ReplyDeleteSame. Atticus is one of my favorite literary characters because he's so calm, compassionate, and wise.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Greg!
I’ve seen so many good Anne quotes today!
ReplyDeleteI went off-topic this week: https://fiftytwo.blog/2021/11/09/ttt-books-you-recommend-the-most/
Happy TTT!
Lori
She's VERY quotable!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lori!
What inspiring quotes! I have to say my favorite is “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” I just loved To Kill a Mockingbird.
ReplyDeleteTKAM is my favorite novel of all time and I think this quote really sums up its theme. It's all about learning to put yourself in someone else's shoes and then acting accordingly—with compassion, kindness, and love. We definitely need more of that in this tough ole world!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Wendy!
So many great quotes! Love that one from Little Women!
ReplyDeleteJo is such a relatable character! Not only is she a reader, but she's such a human human. I love that she recognizes her faults and always tries to overcome them.
DeleteThanks for stopping in, Diana!
Great quotes.I forgot how good To Kill a Mockingbird was
ReplyDeleteI'm not into re-reading, but TKAM is one I re-read every few years. No matter how many times I read it, it seems to just get better and better. There are lots of reasons it's my favorite novel of all time!
DeleteThanks for popping by, Anita!
Great quotes! I love the ones from Anne!
ReplyDeleteI was reading through a list of Anne quotes on Goodreads and, I swear, every single one made me smile! She's such a fun character. I adore her.
DeleteThanks for stopping in, Louise!
Fabulous and inspiring quotes from beloved characters!
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to see why so many people love these characters, isn't it?
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Carol!
Shall we start a movement to elect Atticus Finch for president? With vice-presidential candidate Anne Shirley?
ReplyDeleteIf only fictional candidates were eligible...
It would make for a better world.
I would vote for these two for sure. With Atticus' cool head, Anne's enthusiasm for life, and their collective wisdom, they would do amazing things for this country. Bummer that they're only real in our heads...
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Deb!
Dumbledore has so many great quotes. I love that one.
ReplyDeleteHe's a VERY wise wizard!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, AJ!
I love how you chose your favorite characters to quote. I'm going to have to remember that for next quote time.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite characters are the only ones with quotes I can at least kinda sorta remember—at least enough to find them again on the Internet! Oh, my aging memory...
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Deanna!
Oh, I love your choices, and some of my fav books and characters here too!
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike! These are some very lovable characters, so it's no wonder they're so beloved.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Alex!
Those are all great quotes. I've never read the Harry Potter books, so I found those especially interesting.
ReplyDeleteYou haven't?? You need to, Sam. They're really fun. I would have adored them when I was a kid, but I still very much enjoyed them as an adult.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Sam!
Lovely list. Anne Shirle quotes are some of my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI was intimidated by the prompt this week, so I didn't participate, but I wanted to. I love a lot of quotes from books, but I can't remember them all. I think I need to start keeping a book quote journal or something.
I'm not good at writing them down either. I do keep a journal of quotes that have to do with books and reading. Other kinds, though, I don't record. I do like Goodreads' Quotations feature, where you can save favorite book quotes. I need to use it more.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Kami!
I love the Dumbledore quotes. There is nothing quite like a Harry Potter quote!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. There are so many great ones!
DeleteThanks for popping in, Emily!
Hermione and Dumbledore are such quotable characters! And I loved the Jo Marsh quote. Great list!
ReplyDeleteHermione is hilarious. She's lovable in the books, but I think Emma Watson's portrayal on screen made her seem even more authentic and alive. It's no wonder we all love her so much!
DeleteThanks for coming by, FangirlFlax!
Those Harry Potter quotes are the best! Really, the whole list is good.
ReplyDeleteYou can't go wrong with these well-loved characters!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Helen!
Anne was around a lot this week. Love the quotes you chose for her!
ReplyDeleteShe has some wonderful lines. I love her!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Alicia!
Oh I love the Anne quotes. She's just so quotable. Great list!
ReplyDeleteShe certainly is! And they all make me smile :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Katherine!
Great characters. I'm not much into Harry Potter but since I have three huge fans in the house, I know all about it. LOL And they are great quotes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my TTT which shows readers on the covers.
I love Harry Potter! It's a fun series and I love that it's inspired so many kids to read, fangirl/boy, and just let their inner nerds shine. The books/movies are also super quotable.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marianne!
I totally agree, she inspired so many children to pick up a book and become readers. But it's not for me. I'm really not into fantasy.
DeleteAll excellent choices! Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure! It was fun to look up some of my favorite quotes and share them :)
DeleteThanks for popping in, Lauren!
To Kill A Mocking Bird is my favorite book of all time!
ReplyDeletemy post
Mine as well! It's a great read in so many ways and on so many levels :)
