Top Ten Tuesday: Reading Series-ly in 2022

As much as I love talking about books, I often blank when someone in my real life asks for reading recommendations. I usually just refer them to my blog, which is much better organized and oodles more reliable than my aging brain! I'm having the same reaction to today's TTT prompt—Top Ten Books I Would Hand to Someone Who Claims to Not Like Reading. Nothing's coming readily to mind, so I'm going to go rogue once again.
Since 99.9% of my reading attention will be focused on Cybils Awards nominees until the end of the year, I've been thinking ahead to which books I want to enjoy next year. While updating the spreadsheet I keep of book series I'm reading, my mind turned to which series I want to start in 2022. It goes without saying that I really should not be beginning any new ones when I'm already in the middle of so many, but I've never been much for limiting myself when it comes to books...hence, the following list.

Top Ten Series I Want to Start in 2022
- in no particular order -
1. Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas—This popular series stars Charlotte, an inquisitive Victorian woman, who solves crimes under the assumed name of Sherlock Holmes.
2. Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson—I've actually read the first book in this YA mystery series, but it's been so long that I can't remember who's who or what's what. I'm planning to re-read the series opener, then move on from there.
3. Donut Shop Mystery series by Jessica Beck—Cozy mysteries can be super fun, especially when they star my favorite pastry! This series features a coffee/donut shop owner turned amateur sleuth.
4. Cuba Saga by Chanel Cleeton—This dual-timeline novel features a woman who travels to Havana, her grandmother's birthplace, to spread the dead woman's ashes. As she learns more about her grandmother's past, she learns more about herself and her own history.
5. Gilded Age Mystery series by Rosemary Simpson—It's 1888 when this series opens and a New York City society woman is faced with finding the truth behind her fiancé's suspicious death during a treacherous snowstorm.
6. Highland Bookshop Mystery series by Molly MacRae—Another cozy series, this one revolves around four joint owners of a bookshop in the Scottish Highlands who play detective in their spare time.
7. Loyal League by Alyssa Cole—This historical series set during the American Civil War sounds intriguing.
8. Sweeney St. George series by Sarah Stewart Taylor—I'm enjoying Taylor's Maggy D'Arcy mysteries, so I'm interested in this series about a Boston art historian who investigates curious deaths.
9. Connie Childs series by Sarah Ward—This police procedural series set in England looks promising.
10. Charlotte Holmes by Brittany Cavallaro—Another Sherlock Holmes-inspired series, this one features two modern-day descendants of Holmes and Watson who solve mysteries at their boarding school in Connecticut.

I haven't thought too much about books to read in 2022 yet. I have a few ARC's already, but trying to finish all the ones I obligated myself for this year...and do less next year, LOL!
ReplyDeleteI hear you! At the end of last year, I decided I was no longer going to do scheduled reviews. I would accept books to review only with the caveat that I would get to them if/when I could. It has been SO liberating. My reading/blogging life is so much less stressful now!

Oh wow, I loved the first Gilded Age book, but the 2nd one was new at the time so I decided to wait until it was complete, and then somehow I just...never went back to it, even though it was a 5-star read?? Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteI do this SOOOO often! It's why I'm in the middle of so many series and why I decided to start a spreadsheet to keep track of them. It's easy to get lost in series, especially when you read a bunch of them at a time.

I always have too many series in progress too, lol. The Cuba saga is the only one I've started from your list, but I've really enjoyed the books I've read so far. The writing is beautiful.

CYBILS reading here we come! I am not a huge series reader but when one grabs my attention I love it. The anticipation of what will come in each new book is so much fun.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely regretting now that I didn't read more new MG books this year! Of course, you never know what will be nominated, but you can always make educated guesses. Hopefully, I'll be more prepared next time I judge. Still, it's always fun to read the nominees. I'm enjoying myself!

I need to be better at looking at the TTT topics in advance. When I don't glance at them (or RE-glance at them) until Tuesday, I end up drawing a blank on the prompt. Sometimes, even though I think about the prompt all week, I STILL can't come up with anything! Hence, the twists. I'm glad you enjoy them :)

Lady Sherlock gets lots of love. I am tempted to pick that one up too. I enjoy Cleeton's Cuba books and Truly Devious got even better with the standalone addition. I read two or so books in the Cavallaro. I loved the first book.

You must be in a mystery mood. A Study in Charlotte has been on my TBR for a while. There are lots of series I want to start, but I kinda like to wait until all/most of the books are out. I hate waiting for the next book, and I'm worried I'll forget what happened in the first book.

DeleteI always tell myself to wait to read a series until it's finished, but I never listen! Then, I end up having to re-read books because I forget what's happening and I really don't like re-reading. *Sigh* Someday, I'll learn...

I would HIGHLY recommend the Cuban Saga. SO. GOOD. Chanel Cleeton is such a talented writer. I would say throw your TBR to the wind and start this series. The audio is good, too.

Lots for me to investigation there. My recommendation for a cosy crime series to read would be the Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Flo, books by T.E. Kinsey. Huge fun.

Rosemary Simpson's series is one I really want to read...I love books set in the Gilded Age!

Hey Susan! You've got some good series on your list. I've read all the Lady Sherlock books except her newest that came out this week. On the hold list at the library for that one. I've also read the Truly Devious books. Several of the others mentioned are on my TBR. Enjoy!

I've been meaning to pick up An Extraordinary Union for ages. I've read two other Alyssa Cole novels and enjoyed them immensely, so know this will also be enjoyable. Hope you are able to pick up all these in the new year!

I didn't realize the Cuba Saga was a series! Now I'm extra intrigued as that book has been on my TBR for awhile. I really enjoy the Sherry Thomas series and I want to read the Molly MacRae series. I feel like I read several in the Sarah Stewart Taylor series years ago and really enjoyed but if I remember right I had a hard time finding them at the time. I should pick it up again.
