2024 Literary Escapes Challenge
2024 Build Your Library Reading Challenge
Top Ten Tuesday: The Next Few in the Queue
1. The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer—Marg over at The Intrepid Reader suggested we do a buddy read of this World War II novel, so I started reading it yesterday. It's a dual-timeline story about secrets, war, love, and learning to use one's voice. I'm enjoying it so far.
2. Six Feet Deep Dish by Mindy Quigley—Speaking of cozies, I just got a copy of this one from the publisher. It's the first in a new series set in a Wisconsin pizzeria. Sounds delicious!
3. The Cracked Spine by Paige Shelton—I mentioned this book last week on my TTT list about books I want to read that are set in Scotland. While sorting through my personal library in preparation for moving, I realized I own copies of most of the books in the Scottish Bookshop series. For the first installment, though, I'm going to have to hit up the library. There's a little bit of a waiting list for The Cracked Spine, but it should move fast.
4. A Spy in the House by Y.S. Lee—Another discovery I made (or a re-discovery, really) while purging my books was this YA historical mystery series. It's about a secret detective agency made up of Victorican women. I read most of the books as they came out and enjoyed them, but I never finished the series. Since I own all of them, I think I'm going to re-read them starting with this first installment.
5. The Messy Lives of Book People by Phaedra Patrick—This contemporary novel sounds fun. It's about a woman who makes ends meet by working as a maid. In her spare time, she escapes into books and dreams of writing her own. When her employer—a bestselling author—dies, she's given the opportunity to finish the writer's last novel, a task that will change her own life forever.
6. The Making of Her by Bernadette Jiwa—Is a book set in 1996 really considered historical fiction? I was a college sophomore then and it really doesn't seem like that long ago! Anyway, this novel is set in Dublin in 1996. It's about a woman who is living her best life when she receives a life-or-death plea from the daughter she placed for adoption thirty years ago. I'm always up for an adoption story, so this sounds right up my alley.
7. Hypnosis is For Hacks by Tamara Berry—I enjoyed the first book in this cozy mystery series, so I'm excited to read this second installment. The series stars a sham medium and is lots of fun so far.
8. The Girls With No Names by Serena Burdick—This historical has been on my TBR for too long. I just picked up a copy from the library so I can finally get it read. It concerns the wrongful commitment of a privileged young woman to a home for wayward girls and her sister, who's determined to rescue her, even if it means incarcerating herself.
9. Murder in Old Bombay by Nev March—Another series opener, this historical mystery is based on a true story about two women who fell from a clock tower in colonial India. The accident looks a lot like murder, which leads Captain Jim Agnihotri to investigate.
10. Hide by Kiersten White—I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this novel on here before, but it sounds so good that I'm going to mention it again. The story concerns a vicious hide-and-seek competition held in an abandoned amusement park. The winner snags a pile of cash big enough to change their lives forever. Mack is determined to win, but something not quite of this world has been let loose in the playing field...
There you go, the ten books I will might read next. What do you think of my picks? Have you read any of them? What funny titles did you highlight on your list today? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.
Happy TTT!

I went rogue this week too. I did punny cozy mysteries the last time this topic came around so I was at a loss this time. I hope you enjoy all of these books when you get around to them.
ReplyDeletePunny cozy mystery titles are always fun. Even the really bad ones make me smile :)
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Suzanne!
I hope you love all of these books!
ReplyDeleteMy post: https://lydiaschoch.com/top-ten-tuesday-hilarious-book-titles/
Thank you! I hope I do, too. They all sound like reads I'll like, but you never know, do you?
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lydia!
A lot of people did a twist on their topic because we all had some sort of problem, so I'm not surprised you came up with something else.
ReplyDeleteYour first book sounds highly interesting. But I'm reading three book club books at the moment, so I better not commit to another one.
Thanks for visiting my TTT this week.
I'm a little over halfway through THE THINGS WE CANNOT SAY and I'm enjoying it. It's not knocking my socks off exactly, but it's a compelling read so far. I've been meaning to read it ever since it came out, so I'm glad to finally get it crossed off my list.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Marianne!
I am always happy when such a book turns up in one of the challenges. So, I'm glad you got to read it finally.
DeleteI am having a hard time commenting on some blogs, even signed it is keeping me anonymous. I have no idea how to fix it, it's frustrating. I hope my blog is not one you are having issues with.
ReplyDeleteSo weird! I've only been asked to login on one blog (Wordpress) and no matter how many times I put in my correct info, it just kept asking me to login again. It's so odd, especially since it's a blog I comment on frequently. Hopefully, the error will get cleared up soon.
DeleteI had no problem commenting on your blog. I should have made a list of the ones I had trouble with so I could notify the authors. Oops.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Cindy!
It's neither your fault nor that of the other bloggers since so many of us are having problems.
DeleteGood to know that your move, remodeling, etc., are progressing. Our big update is that our remodel is supposed to begin tomorrow in one of our bathrooms. Yay! Anyway, it will be a start. I have new appliances in boxes all over the house, but all of them are here. So, when the kitchen redo begins, those will be available. Patience is the key, Susan! Ha! Oh, I read HIDE a week or so ago. I'll be curious what you think about that one when you get finished. I won't spoil anything by telling about my thoughts right now. LOL
ReplyDeleteThat was us a couple weeks ago! We had a full kitchen and laundry room full of appliances in boxes in our garage. They couldn't go in until the cabinets were installed and those were delayed. Ugh! Thankfully, they are all in now. At this point, the projects that still need to be done in our house are mostly just fluff—kitchen backsplash, crown moulding, trim, new hinges on the doors, speakers in the family and theater rooms, etc. I don't know how long it will take to finish everything—hopefully, not TOO much longer!
DeleteI'm excited that you're starting your remodel. I hope it goes well. Patience is definitely key in this process. Good luck with it.
How funny that you just finished HIDE. I'm planning to read it next, so we'll definitely need to compare notes when I finish it.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Kay!
Good picks! I'll probably read The Cracked Spine soon too, assuming my library hold comes in when expected. And Six Feet Deep Dish is a great title! Perfect for a cozy.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how to fix the commenting error, sadly. The biggest issue I usually run into with commenting is that I leave the tabs open too long without posting my comment, and so I have to refresh the page (which is annoying if I forget to copy the comment I've already typed first).
Yeah, this is an error I've never seen before. It seems like it's a Wordpress thing, so hopefully they can get things cleared up.
DeleteI just started listening to THE CRACKED SPINE on audio. It's fun so far. I hope we both enjoy it!
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Nicole!
Same here, Cindy. Sometimes, I can change it to my name, sometimes I can't comment at all. I hope they will repair this glitch soon. It's so annoying that we can't report these problems anywhere.
ReplyDeletegood luck.
I found a forum where someone reported the problem to Wordpress, who said to contact the folks at JetPack. Hopefully, JetPack sees the complaints and gets the problem fixed. It's super annoying and even more so for the bloggers who aren't getting all their comments.
DeleteThanks, Susan. I will see and report that one blog that I always commented on that I cannot comment on at all. I have informed the blogger on other posts on my site or that of others but so far, no change.
DeleteGreat picks! Although I have to say - I read Six Feet Deep Dish and was so turned off by the constant fatphobic comments that it wasn't an enjoyable read at all.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I'm sad to hear this. Also, it's surprising that an author in today's market is (1) so insensitive and (2) able to get those kinds of comments past editors and sensitivity readers. Weird. Thanks for the heads-up.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Leah!
Thanks for visiting my blog. I had trouble logging on (darn Blogspot) but here I am at last. I haven't read any of these books so can't offer any advice but I do know that feeling of being unsure what I WANT to read next.
ReplyDeleteOh, really? Ugh. I haven't had any problem commenting on Blogger or LiveJournal blogs, just Wordpress. I'm glad you were able to login here.
DeleteSeriously, why is it so hard sometimes to choose what to read next??
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Anne!
Six Feet Deep Dish and The Cracked Spine look like books I might enjoy. Have you read Amanda Flower's Magic Garden series? It takes place in Scotland. I only read the first one so far, but I enjoyed it and will probably continue reading the series. I had that problem on one blog a few weeks ago, but the next day it worked. So I'm not sure what was or is going on. Moving is a big job. Thank you for stopping by my blog to chat in the midst of your move. Good luck and enjoy your new home. :-)
ReplyDeleteNo, I haven't read that Flower series. I'll have to give it a go. I really enjoy her Amish Candy Shop series. It's a fun one.
DeleteMoving really is a huge job. I still have a fair amount of boxes to unpack, but I have to wait until all my cabinets are in, then the drywall guys and the painters have to come back to do some touch-ups. THEN, I'll be able to unpack everything. It will be so nice when it's ALL DONE.
Thanks for popping in, Meezan!
Unpacking always takes forever. Good luck with it! And I love your list of books...I thought Hide was fun summer read, and both The Messy Lives of Book People and Girls With No Names look good to me. :D
ReplyDeleteUnpacking really does take an eternity! We've still got boxes all over the place—they'll all be empty someday. I hope.
DeleteI'm excited for HIDE. It sounds fun. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lark!
Six Feet Deep Dish sounds super cute!
ReplyDeleteIt does, although Leah's comments above are making me a little leery about reading it. Darn it!
DeleteThanks for stopping in, Louise!
These are great looking books. I hope you get to some of them.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with all the moving etc and I hope that you can get a decent nights sleep soon.
Emily @ Budget Tales Book Blog
I went to bed early last night and I took a nap today, so I'm feeling well rested now :) It's looking pretty overcast right now; hopefully, it won't storm again tonight!
DeleteThanks for popping in, Emily!
These sound like great books to read next. I really want to read YS Lee. Her books have been on my TBR for so long. I hope you enjoy these!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a hot minute since I read Lee, but I remember really enjoying The Agency books that I read. I'm excited to revisit them. If you read the series, be sure to let me know what you think.
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Jenni!
I hope all your moving and remodeling is going well. I love this list. I love the title and cover of Six Feet Deep Dish! So cute!
ReplyDeleteRemodeling is going well, thanks. It feels slow, but I really am seeing progress every day. I still just want it to be over and done, though!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Wendy!
Darn it! Your blog is one that is giving me the "Not Acceptable" error, so I wasn't able to post a comment. I was going to say that I loved BURIED IN A GOOD BOOK, too. It's super fun. Cozies are always fun reads, but it was even more fun than usual. Glad you enjoyed it as well.
DeleteThis was a really hard topic for me too! The Messy Lives of Book People sounds so good.. I'm going to add that one to the TBR right now! I had an issue with commenting on some posts last month. I just signed out of everything, even my google accounts (email associated) and re-signed in. It took like 2 tries and then it worked. I have no idea if that did it or what but it's been fine since!
ReplyDeleteI tried signing out of Wordpress and turning off my VPN, which sometimes causes weird Internet issues, but neither of those things helped. Bummer. Since other people are having the same problem, I don't think it's a problem on my end (this time—usually it's totally me).
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Leslie!
It's definitely not you, Susan. I have a lot of problems with WordPress at the moment (and I'm with Blogger) and so do many others.
DeleteThere are some good books on this list! I hope you get to some of them soon. Like you, my reading is slow right now with packing and my move (next Wednesday!)
ReplyDeleteOh, wow, it's coming right up! I hope all the sorting and packing is going well. Good luck in your new digs. Will you have a place for your LFL??
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Helen!
The cozy mysteries sounds like fun, they always have such fun titles. There seems to be so many food-related cozies and book-related cozies and I think it's part of being cozy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog. Have a lovely day.
P.S., I haven't encounted at any wordpress errors but with Blogger, I had to sign in someone's comment space (the part where it says 'comment as') a few times before it let me sign in.
Right? There are TONS of food and book related cozies. And those are my favorite ones! Ha.
DeleteA few other people have reported problems with Blogger commenting as well. So strange. I wonder what's going on??
Thanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Lissa!
I haven't had that commenting issue yet. That's weird. I know there have been a couple of Jetpack updates recently... Maybe they're trying to fix it? Hopefully. It looks like you have some fun books coming up!
ReplyDeleteI hope so! It's so irritating when I can't comment on people's blogs like I want to. Fingers crossed that the problem is getting fixed as we speak!
DeleteThanks, as always, for coming by and commenting, Deanna!
Cozy mysteries are fun. :) Hypnosis is For Hacks sounds like it would be fun to read, and honestly reminds me of the TV show Psych because of the premise of a fraud psychic/medium.
ReplyDeleteI haven't experienced that problem, though I have had friends that have. And it's weird, I don't know why it is happening.
-Quinley
It is like Psych in some ways! Not as cleverly written, but still fun and humorous.
DeleteI'm glad to know I'm not the only one encountering the commenting issue. Usually, it's user error. LOL.
Thanks for stopping in, Quinley!
I've been having trouble commenting here and there lately, too.
ReplyDeleteI would appreciate it if you'd read Messy Lives of Book People next. I'm very curious about that one!
You too, huh? It's so irritating, isn't it? Usually when I have similar problems, it's because I've picked up a virus on my computer. That doesn't appear to be the problem this time, but still...
DeleteI'll try to get to BOOK PEOPLE soon and let you know what I think.
Thanks for popping by!
You’ve picked some good ones to read. I may join in reading some myself.
ReplyDeletewww.rsrue.blogspot.com
I actually like the sound of just about all of these, but haven't read any. The things we cannot say is on my TBR, so I'll vote or that one.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with all life's craziness around you, time for blogging will return again!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Elza Reads
The cover of Hide is pretty creepy. Sounds like an intense read!
ReplyDeleteI thought I already commented, but can't see it. I have read three of these books and have 1 on my TBR. I set my tentative TBRs all the time, but very seldom stick to them, at least I might read one or two. I hope you enjoy them all when you get to them, Susan.
ReplyDelete
