Top Ten Tuesday: Let's Get the Fall Reading Party Started! Or My Fall TBR List, Part One

It's TTT time and once again we've got a great topic—Top Ten Favorite Character Relationships—that I'm just not feeling. Since next week is all about our Fall TBR lists, I'm going to get that party started early with part one of my list. It's hard to believe, but we only have 110 days left in 2023 (not counting today). That's a little over three months to cram in all the reading I still want to accomplish this year. I've read 141 books so far, so I should have no trouble hitting my yearly goal of 200. I'm also doing well on all of my reading challenges, so I'm hoping to complete them by December 31 as well. To that end, the majority of the books on my Fall TBR are titles that I'm reading for reading challenges.

Top Ten Books On My Fall TBR List (Part One)
1. Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman—This YA novel tells the story of Rory Hendrix, a smart, savvy girl who's desperate to prove she's not the future-less trailer trash everyone thinks she is. Told through a series of social workers' reports, arrest records, diary entries, letters, etc., it's an original coming-of-age story.

2. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid—When reclusive Evelyn Hugo, an aging Hollywood actress, finally decides to tell her life story to the press, she chooses an obscure reporter named Monique Grant. A shocked Monique listens in fascination as Evelyn reveals her incredible tale, one that—shockingly—intersects with Monique's own.
PopSugar Reading Challenge—A Book About Divorce AND the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge
3. War Girls by Tochi Onyebuchi—Set in 2172 Nigeria, this YA novel features two sisters who are determined to fight for their future on a climate-changed, war-ravaged, abandoned-for-space Earth.

4. Last Call at the Nightingale by Katherine Schellman—The first installment in a historical mystery series, this novel features a Prohibition-era seamstress who's desperate to escape her tedious, poverty-stricken life. She finds freedom and escape at a secret dance hall where anything goes. When she discovers a dead body behind the club, she becomes embroiled in a dangerous murder investigation.

5. Sun Storm by Asa Larsson—This is the first book in a Swedish mystery series starring Stockholm lawyer Rebecka Martinsson. Our heroine returns to her hometown in spite of the disgrace she suffered there years before. Only an emergency would take her back and that's exactly what this is: her friend's brother has been viciously murdered. Rebecka will stop at nothing to find his killer.

6. The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer—Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a good Jewish girl. She's also secretly a best-selling author of Christmas romances. She just can't get enough of the Christian holiday with all of its magic and merriment. Hanukkah pales in comparison. When Rachel's editor insists she write a "diverse" holiday story, she turns to an upcoming Hanukkah celebration for inspiration. Working with her archenemy isn't part of the plan. Neither is falling for him...

7. Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese—Tired of trying to find The One so she can start a family, first grade teacher Lauren Bailey decides to pursue international adoption on her own. River Sing Me Home by Eleanor Shearer—Set in Barbados in 1834, this novel is about a enslaved woman who learns that in spite of a government act declaring an end to slavery, her "owner" refuses to let any of his slaves go. She runs, driven to find her five children, all of whom have been sold by the plantation owner. No matter what she finds, she can't rest until she knows what has happened to her beloved offspring.

10. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly—This popular non-fiction title tells the fascinating story of the African-American female mathematicians who played a crucial role in America's space program by working as "human computers" at NASA. These brilliant, intrepid women were invaluable assets in spite of all the prejudice they faced because of both their ethnicity and their gender.

I hope you enjoy all of these, Susan. I have read Hidden Figures and Matzah Ball and I liked them both. I read 1984 back in high school, so a long time ago and I always thought it was interesting. Of course now that we are way past that date, it seems kind of funny.
ReplyDelete1984 does seem like a VERY long time ago! LOL. Somehow I was never assigned to read anything by Orwell throughout my high school and college experiences, despite earning a degree in English. It's probably time to change that. LOL.

I need to start thinking about my fall tbr! I need to find some nonfiction titles for nonfiction November and some novellas for November Novellas. I’ve only seen the Hidden Figures movie. ~Carol @ ReadingLadies

Nice change up! I somehow managed to *not* have to read 1984 in high school, but now as an adult, I actually want to. And Before I Called You Mine and Last Call at the Nightingale sound interesting! Those might find themselves on my TBR now too. Happy TTT!

ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of it before I started Googling books with robot/cyborg/AI characters. Sci-fi isn't really my thing, but the story sounds interesting enough that I'm willing to give it a try. I hope I like it too!

This looks like a great TBR! I remember being appropriately disturbed by 1984 when I read it a short while ago. It's definitely worth picking up. And I hope you enjoy Hidden Figures! I really enjoyed that one.

What an interesting "partial" list you've created. Several of the ten are ones I'm curious about, including the couple of first books in new series. I'm reading so many series, most of them far from being caught up on, that I shouldn't add new ones right now...but I can't resist. OK, I'm off to look closer at at least six of these now...
ReplyDeleteI see so many people reading 1984 these days that I'm taking it as a good sign that people's eyes have finally been opened about what is happening all over the world today. That's the first step, I hope, toward correcting some of the governmental overreach that's become so prevalent.
I hear you! I'm in the middle of a bunch of series as well and I have the same problem, I just can't resist starting new ones. It's a curse that we both seem to have :)

Ooh, glad to see Girlchild has jumped up a bit on your TBR. Not really YA, as opposed to adult fiction about a teen, which I realize is a minor distinction, but there's such a different cadence to the writing. Still lovely, though, despite its hard topics. I'm curious what you'll end up thinking of it.

I read 1984 not long after 1984. LOL! It was one of the better high school required reading books. I kind of enjoyed all the Orwell books we read. The Matzah Ball was so fun. I had a great time with that one. I started Hidden Figures, and I liked the beginning, but you, non-fiction just isn't my thing.

I love the variety in this list. Evelyn Hugo is one of my favorites and I also enjoyed Hidden Figures. 1984 is definitely a timely read!

You have a great variety of books in your fall TBR. I've read a couple of these, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and 1984, which I enjoyed. I hope you get around to reading all of these and enjoy them.

I read Daisy Jones and didn't love it that much but I really think I should try Evelyn Hugo and see if that's a better fit for me.

ReplyDeleteSeveral of you persuaded me to prioritize BEFORE I CALLED YOU MINE. I'm about 1/3 of the way through it and I'm really enjoying the read. As an adoptive mom, I'm always drawn to these kinds of stories. I also love the novel's warm, uplifting vibe. I just hope everything turns out okay for Lauren!
