Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Book Series

I've been MIA with Top Ten Tuesday lately and on the blog in general. Life's been busy. I just got back from an Alaska cruise and a family reunion in the Seattle area. Stepping out of the Phoenix airport into oven-hot temps very early this morning was a rude awakening after all the lovely, cool (but not all that cold) PNW weather. I'm hot, exhausted, and still nauseous from a bumpy plane ride, BUT I'm happy to be home!

Today's TTT prompt is all about series. I love sinking into series, where I can enjoy characters, settings, and stories. I'm in the middle of so many of them that I started keeping a spreadsheet to keep them all in order. The topic is Top Ten Favorite Books From Ten Favorite Book Series. That's too big of a challenge for my tired, aging brain, so I'm just going to give you my top ten favorite series. How's that?

As always, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl.

Top Ten Favorite Book Series

(Covers are for the first book in each series, not necessarily my favorite one.)

1. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling (middle-grade fantasy)

2. Armand Gamache by Louise Penny (adult murder mystery)

3. Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer (YA historical fiction/action adventure)

4. Rockton/Haven's Rock by Kelley Armstrong (adult murder mystery)

5. Myrtle Hardcastle by Elizabeth C. Bunce (middle-grade historical fiction/mystery)

6. Tempe Brennan by Kathy Reichs (adult murder mystery)

7. Alcatraz by Gennifer Choldenko (middle-grade historical fiction)

8. Aaron Falk by Jane Harper (adult murder mystery)

9. Veronica Speedwell by Deanna Raybourn (adult historical fiction/mystery)

10. Jane/Mary books by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows (YA historical fiction/alternate history/supernatural)

There you go, ten of my favorite book series. Have you read any of them? What are your favorite series? I'd truly love to know. Leave me a comment on this post and I will gladly return the favor on your blog.

Happy TTT!

  1. OOh nice ones! The first Harry Potter is definitely magical! I tend to gravitate to the first book of a series a lot! Although I did really enjoy the third book of HP too! Kelley has sooo many series, sometimes it's even hard for me to choose just a favorite series of hers let alone 1 book from 1 series. Lol. I still need to get caught up on her releases from this year, not to mention a ton from the past few years!

    Great picks!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

    1. Same. The first book is usually the one I remember the most at least! And the first HP really is the most magical since it's introducing the whole Hogwarts world. I love it :)

    1. It was fun to get away, especially since we traveled somewhere that is beautiful and COOL. It was lovely to get away from the unrelenting Arizona heat for awhile.

  3. I only read Harry Potter from your list. Sucks the author turns out to be super problematic.

    1. Honestly, I pay little attention to what authors do outside of writing books. Same with actors, musicians, etc. I just enjoy their art for their art. And I will always love HP, no matter what!

    1. I did enjoy my trip, especially being with family on the cruise and afterward at the reunion. I hadn't seen some of them in over 10 years! It was nice to be able to spend time together and get reacquainted.

  7. I haven't read more in the series, but I did enjoy My Lady Jane. Never did read the Harry Potter books when everyone else was, but I love how much so many readers enjoy those. :)

    1. I love the whole Jane/Mary series. It's really fun. I think MY PLAIN JANE is my favorite so far.

The HP books didn't come out until I was an adult, but I fell in love with them all the same!

  8. I should have gone with favorite series this week, too. But I got stuck trying to figure out a favorite book from each, and then just gave up in mental exhaustion. ;D I really love Rowling's Harry Potter series, too. And Armstrong's Rockton series is another favorite of mine.

    1. Ha ha. I didn't even try! My memory is not good enough to remember favorites from series, especially if it's been a long time since I read them. I definitely took the easy way out :)

    2. Thankfully, the nausea went away after a couple of days. My husband has had a bad cold ever since we got off the boat. I think we both caught something and it manifested in different ways. Ugh.

I'll always love HP and the Jane/Mary series is so fun. It makes me laugh.

  11. I forgot about the Bloody Jack series. I read the first book long ago and purchased all the books in the series for my library. A few kids were faithfully making their way through them, thought I suspect the target market was more middle grade students.

What did you do in Seattle? I live about an hour south of the city and often go up there for sporting events or theater shows. Last week we went to a Chris Stapleton concert.

    1. The Bloody Jack series has never gotten the acclaim I think it deserves. Since the author died, it probably never will. I enjoy it a lot, though, and I'm glad your students do too. It's a YA series that starts out fairly clean, but gets a lot "saltier" as it goes on. The first few books would probably be okay for upper middle-graders.

We flew in and out of Seattle, but we actually didn't do anything in the city. I have lots of family in the Bremerton area, so that's where we spent most of our time. Lucky you that you get to live in such a beautiful place. I'm jealous!

  13. I have a Kelley Armstrong book on my list this week also, but it's from a different series. Her thrillers are too scary for me these days.

    1. They can get really gritty. I usually prefer gentler mysteries/thrillers, but I'm a sucker for Armstrong's books.

  18. Welcome back!! Other than not feeling great from the plane, it sounds like a great trip! I would love to see Alaska, but I don't think I will ever make it there. I almost went the same route as you, but I made myself dig deep and do the post as written, LOL! I feel like I have been so lazy with it lately.

    1. The parts of Alaska we saw were beautiful. I'd definitely go back, although I'll skip the cruise ship next time. My husband's cousin keeps inviting us to visit her in Anchorage and I'm sure we'll take her up on it sometime.

  21. A great looking list! I did the same as you. Just picking series. I just did the last ten that I had read.

I love Harry Potter and everything that goes with it 😂

I hope that you recover soon. I have never come home to heat after a holiday although the last time I went away was over 6 years ago so maybe these days I would 🙄

  22. Oh I forgot about the Aaron Falk series maybe because it was interrupted by a random mystery! I wish she had done the Falk series consecutively. I loved how it wrapped up for him! ~Carol @ ReadingLadies

  24. What lovely places to visit. My Alaskan cruise was one of my favorite vacations. I read and enjoyed the first two Lady Jane books. I see that they were adapted. Have you watched at all?

  25. The Myrtle Hardcastle books are brilliant! Such a nice blend of mystery, action, and historical vibes.

  26. I haven't heard of many of your series but some sound great. Would you believe yours is the first post mentioning Harry Potter?

    Thanks for visiting my post.

  28. I love the Deanna Raybourn and the Myrtle Hardcastle books look fun. Fun list!

  29. I'm glad to hear that all of your travels were fun! Sounds like you went to some awesome places. 🙂
Love you list. Harry Potter will always be one of my most favorite series ever. And I absolutely adored Bones. Watched that series in real life and recently just binge-watched it with my daughter. SO good!

  30. Great list, as usual. Your travels sound awesome, even if you had to return home to an oven. I'm a huge fan of the Tempe Brennan and Veronica Speedwell series - I don't hear too many people talking about the Tempe Brennan series, which is a shame, because it's a really good one!
